Five Western Australian swimmers have qualified to represent Australia at the FINA World Youth Artistic Swimming Championships to be held in Slovakia from August 28 – September 1 this year.
Synchro WA today announced that the swimmers, from both the West Coast Splash Synchronised Swimming Club (based in Claremont) and SupaNova Synchronised Swimming Club (based in Booragoon), would be part of the 2019 Australian National Youth Synchronised Swimming Team.
Georgia Brown, Bianca Chira, Tess Hay and Zoe Hewson, from West Coast Splash and Chantelle Wheatley from SupaNova have qualified. All the swimmers are between the ages of 13 and 15 years old.
Synchro WA’s High Performance Head Coach, Briana Preiss, said the WA athletes had been preparing for selections since August last year.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for our WA athletes to represent their country at a major FINA event. Through hard work and determination these swimmers have truly earned their spots on the squad and are an amazing example of the young athletes in our sport today,” Briana said.
She said as well as attending weekly training at their representative clubs, the girls attend high performance training twice a week. High performance training is aimed specifically at the swimmers preparation for national team selections at National Championships. It includes technical land training, water training and mental preparation.
The Australian team to attend the FINA World Youth Artistic Swimming Championships in Slovakia was selected after the 2019 Australian National Championships held in April in Sydney.
The swimmers had their first national team training camp at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra immediately after the National Championships and will now attend a series of National Team training camps before flying to Slovakia in August.
